THE ROLE OF SOGEMI

Sogemi – the company for the Construction and Management of Milan’s Wholesale Food Markets – is a joint-stock company that manages the Food Market and the Neighbourhood Markets on behalf of the Municipality of Milan. The company provides a public service of general interest for the city, the metropolitan area, and the wider Lombardy region. 

 

Sogemi operates according to principles of food quality and safety, as well as environmental, economic, and social sustainability. It actively promotes workplace safety across its facilities and is committed to developing innovative programmes designed to evolve beyond the traditional wholesale market model.

Our goal is to create a strategic infrastructure for the trade and distribution of agri-food products. Our Food Market serves as a hub capable of showcasing the quality and excellence of both Italian and international food, while meeting the demands of increasingly discerning consumers who prioritise the quality, safety, and sustainability of the products they choose.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

In line with the objectives of Agenda 2030, Sogemi actively promotes environmental, economic, and social sustainability through concrete projects in resource management, the use of renewable energy, waste disposal, and the fight against food waste.

FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY

Sogemi places particular emphasis on ensuring traceability, tracking, and the highest hygienic and sanitary safety standards through the controls carried out by operators within the HACCP self-monitoring system.

CENTRALISED LOGISTICS

A centralised and digitalised logistics system with dedicated loading and unloading areas, allowing the recording and monitoring of incoming and outgoing goods flows, for better control of food quality and safety and greater transparency in commercial transactions.

WORKPLACE SAFETY

Respectful of the highest social and worker safety standards, Sogemi implements organisational, technological, and preventive measures to ensure safe, protected workplaces in compliance with current regulations.

SOGEMI’S STORY

    THE ORIGINS
    In 1956, Ortomercato S.p.A. was founded, the first joint-stock company set up to manage wholesale markets on behalf of the Municipality of Milan. In 1965, the Fruit and Vegetable Market was inaugurated, a symbol of modernity and a new vision in agri-food distribution.

    The birth of SogeMi
    In 1979, Ortomercato S.p.A. became SO.GE.M.I. S.p.A. – a company for the establishment and operation of wholesale food markets in Milan. The new company was tasked with studying, designing and carrying out the renovation of existing food markets, with the aim of modernising and optimising market management.

    SogeMi and market management
    With the 1980 agreement, the Municipality of Milan entrusted Sogemi with the management of the markets, granting it surface rights over areas and facilities and the concession to operate the public slaughterhouse. This marked the beginning of a phase of consolidation and reorganisation of existing structures, with the aim of improving the efficiency and quality of the services offered.

    In 2000, Sogemi inaugurated two new facilities: the Fish Market, which moved from Via Sammartini, and the Flower Market, which moved from Corso XXII Marzo. In 2002, the Shareholders' Meeting unanimously approved the closure of the public slaughterhouse service. This decision was prompted by the gradual decline in slaughtering activity as a result of improvements in refrigerated transport.

    An increasingly prominent role and a new identity
    In 2010, the company increased its assets by acquiring ownership of the Palazzine Liberty buildings, for a total value of approximately €32 million. In 2015, Milan hosted Expo: its mascot Foody, a symbol of quality, safety and food excellence, was purchased by Sogemi in 2018, the year in which the Milan wholesale markets changed their name to Foody Mercato Agroalimentare Milano.

    Towards the future
    In 2019, the City of Milan approved the market redevelopment project, with work scheduled for completion in 2026. With the Foody 2025 project, Sogemi is looking to the future with a progressive investment plan to create a cutting-edge, sustainably managed Food Hub. In July 2025, the Municipality of Milan entrusted Sogemi with the redevelopment and management of the Neighbourhood Markets, with the aim of turning them into multifunctional spaces for citizens.
